Every class period has two moments that decide how the rest of it goes: the first five minutes and the last five.
The first five set the tone. Students walk in, find something waiting on the board, and get to work, or they walk in and the room drifts while attendance gets taken. The last five decide whether you know what they learned. Either you ask one sharp question and leave with real information, or the bell rings and you are guessing.
Everything in between matters too, and most of that comes down to culture: the routines, the expectations, and the relationships that make a room run when you are not standing over it.
Bell to Bell is a newsletter about all three. It is written by a working classroom teacher for other working teachers, and it is built to be used, not admired.
Who is writing this
I'm Clay Shumate. I teach World History, and I have taught in K–12 and at the community college level. I hold a Class A certification in Social Studies and History for grades 6–12 and an M.Ed. from the University of Montevallo. Before teaching, I spent five years managing and opening retail stores, which is where I learned to think in systems. I have also coached varsity soccer, volleyball, baseball, golf, and softball.
I believe each student is effectively their own classroom. I believe in project-based learning, in teaching soft skills on purpose, and in the idea that college is not the only path. Technical and trade programs prepare students just as well.
What you'll get here
Bell to Bell has three sections. You can follow all of them or just the one you need.
Bell Ringers: Warm-ups, opening routines, and ways to make the first five minutes run on autopilot.
Exit Tickets: Quick checks, exit slips, and, most importantly, what to do with the answers the next day.
Classroom Culture: Positive reinforcement, classroom management, and the systems behind a room that runs itself.
Expect practical posts: a routine you can try tomorrow, a set of prompts you can copy, a template you can print, or a straight answer to a question teachers keep asking. No fluff, no sales pitch in disguise.
The free tools behind this newsletter
Bell to Bell is the newsletter for three free projects. Every one of them is free to use, with no student accounts and no sign-up required to get to the good stuff.
Daily Bell Ringers posts fresh bell ringers every school day for grades 6–8 and grades 9–12, covering ELA, math, science, social studies, and current events. They are live before the school day starts. There is also a searchable Bell Ringer Library, an AI Bell Ringer Creator that builds a custom warm-up from any topic, and free printable bell ringer sheets.
Daily Exit Tickets gives you a new exit ticket every day, a library of prompts, board mode with a built-in timer, exit ticket games, quick-check tools like Fist to Five, a name picker, and printable exit slips at 2, 4, or 6 per page.
Elevate the Norm is the classroom culture side: positive reinforcement systems, classroom management guides for grades 6–12, and a free resource library of templates and checklists you can download without handing over an email address.
How to get the most out of it
Subscribe so new posts land in your inbox. It's free.
Bookmark today's bell ringers and today's exit ticket. Those two pages alone cover both ends of your period.
Reply to any email. Tell me what is not working in your room. The best posts here will come from real questions.
Glad you're here. Let's make every minute count, bell to bell.
