That depends almost entirely on the question.

Make it answerable in under a minute

If a student needs the teacher to explain the prompt, the first five minutes are gone. Read your question out loud. If it takes more than one breath, cut it.

Give everyone a way in

Questions with one right answer split the room fast. Students who know it finish in ten seconds. Students who don't know it shut down. Better prompts let anyone start:

"Which of these would you rather have, and why?"

"What's one thing you notice in this picture?"

"Rank these three from most to least important."

Connect it to today

The best bell ringers make the lesson easier to start. If you're teaching causes of a war, ask students what makes two friends stop speaking. Then use their answers when the lesson begins.

Rotate the type

Students tune out the same format every day. Mix it up across the week:

Monday: a quick review question from last week

Tuesday: an image to analyze

Wednesday: an opinion question with a reason

Thursday: a vocabulary or skill check

Friday: a fun or reflective prompt

Use the answers

If you never come back to what students wrote, they'll stop writing much. Call on two or three students, or use one answer as the hook for the lesson.

More examples

Browse sample prompts in Bell Ringer Questions, or let the Free AI Bell Ringer Creator write a week's worth for your subject in a minute.

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. The whole room is watching to see what you'll do.

The worst move is the most natural one: arguing in public. Once it's a contest, the student can't back down without losing face, and neither can you.

Figure out what the refusal means

Students refuse for a handful of reasons: they don't understand the task, they're embarrassed, something happened before class, or they're testing the boundary. The fix depends on which one it is, and you won't know until you ask privately.

Get the audience out of it

Give the class something to do, then go to the student. Crouch down, keep your voice low, and ask a simple question: "What's getting in the way?" Many refusals end right there.

Shrink the task

"Do the worksheet" is a wall. "Do the first two problems and I'll come back" is a step. Offer a starting point small enough that saying yes costs nothing.

Offer a choice that still gets the work done

"Do you want to start with number one or number three?" "Do you want to work here or at the back table?" A choice gives the student control without giving up the expectation.

Follow up later

If the student still won't work, don't escalate in the moment. Note it, move on, and talk after class or the next day. A short conversation away from peers often tells you more than any consequence would. A call home that starts with something positive helps, too.

When it keeps happening

Repeated refusal needs a plan, not a reaction. Track when it happens and what comes before it. Patterns show up quickly.

For more strategies, read What to Do When a Student Refuses to Work and Classroom Management Strategies for Difficult Students at Elevate the Norm.

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. An exit ticket is the cheapest way to catch it early.

Pick the problem that reveals the mistake

Don't ask the easiest version of today's skill. Ask the version where students usually go wrong. If you're teaching negative numbers, include subtraction of a negative. If you're teaching fractions, use unlike denominators.

The goal isn't to see who can do it. It's to see how they're getting it wrong.

Ask for the work, not just the answer

A right answer can hide a wrong method. Have students show the step where they made a decision. Even a single line of work is enough to sort the room.

Three formats that work

Solve and explain. One problem plus one sentence: "I knew to ___ because ___."

Find the error. Show a worked problem with one mistake. Students circle it and fix it.

Which is bigger? Two expressions side by side. Students choose and justify.

Sort in two minutes

Make three piles: correct, close, not yet. The close pile is where your next lesson starts. Usually it's one common misstep, and you can fix it in the first five minutes tomorrow, often with a bell ringer built from that exact error.

Don't grade them

Exit tickets work because students tell you the truth about what they know. Grading them makes students cautious. If you want a light accountability system, read Should You Grade Exit Tickets?.

Ready-made prompts

Find more examples in Math Exit Tickets, and pair them with a five-minute warm-up from Math Bell Ringers to open the next day.

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. Fewer teachers have one they can enforce on a Thursday afternoon in March without starting a fight.

The problem usually isn't the rule. It's that the rule depends on the teacher noticing, deciding, and confronting a student in front of everyone, over and over.

Decide where phones live

"Put it away" is vague. Away where? In a pocket, it's one buzz from being back out. Pick a physical place and make it part of the routine: a pocket chart by the door, a basket on each table, or face-down in the top corner of the desk.

Whatever you pick, students should put phones there as part of walking in, the same way they pick up the bell ringer.

Make the consequence boring

A good consequence is small, predictable, and the same every time. First reminder is a quiet tap on the desk. Second time, the phone goes to the basket for the rest of class. That's it. No speech, no debate.

The less drama the consequence has, the less there is for a student to push back against.

Teach the exceptions up front

Some students will need their phones: medical apps, family situations, an approved accommodation. Handle those privately and early so nobody thinks the rule is unfair when they see an exception.

Give phones a job sometimes

If phones are only ever the enemy, students will treat every phone moment as a win. Occasionally build them into the lesson: a quick poll, photographing their notes, looking up a source together. "Phones out for two minutes, then back in the basket" makes the routine stronger, not weaker.

Reward the room, not just the rule

Recognition works better than punishment for most teenagers. A whole-class reward for a phone-free week costs nothing and gives students a reason to remind each other. See Whole-Class Rewards for simple ideas.

Further reading

For the full debate, read Cell Phones in the Classroom: Pros and Cons at Elevate the Norm. Then write your policy on one index card. If it doesn't fit on a card, it's too complicated to enforce.

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. The better ones ask students to look at something and figure it out. A primary source does that in five minutes.

You don't need a document packet or a full DBQ. One image, one short quote, or one map on the board is enough to get a room working.

Why primary sources work as warm-ups

They give every student a way in. A student who didn't read last night can still describe what's in a photograph. A student who reads below grade level can still notice who is standing in the front of a painting and who is in the back.

They also train the habit you want all year: look first, then explain, then ask where it came from.

Three formats that fit in five minutes

1. See, Think, Wonder. Put up an image. Students write one thing they see, one thing they think is going on, and one question they have. That's it.

2. Who wrote this and why? Put up a two- or three-sentence quote without the author's name. Students guess who might have said it, when, and what they wanted the audience to do.

3. What changed? Show two maps of the same place from different years. Students list two differences and guess one cause.

Keep the source short

If students need more than a minute to read it, it's too long for a bell ringer. Cut quotes down to the line that matters. Crop images to the part you want them to notice.

Connect it to the lesson

The warm-up should lead somewhere. If today's lesson is on the Industrial Revolution, a photo of a child working in a textile mill does more than any vocabulary review. Students walk into the lesson already asking why that child is there.

Where to find them

You can build your own in a few minutes with the Free AI Bell Ringer Creator, or pull from the daily Social Studies Bell Ringers at DailyBellringers.org.

Close the loop at the end of class

If the bell ringer raised a question, answer it on the way out. A quick social studies exit ticket that asks students to return to the morning's source shows you who got it.

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. If you’d rather skip the prep, my TPT store, Teacher Emergency Toolkit, has ready-to-use resources for grades 6–12. Instead of being afraid of it or trying to fight it, start teaching students how to use it successfully every day.

That's my position, and I don't think it should be controversial anymore. AI isn't going away, and that's fine. We have to learn to live with it. Right now, AI doesn't know more than we do, and its answers can be wrong. Nobody knows where it will be in ten years. That's exactly why students need to learn to use it carefully now.

This applies to every subject, not just social studies.

The method: use a resource to find another resource

Here's how I build AI into a lesson.

1. Start with a small research task tied to the standard. Students can work alone or in groups.

2. Students start with one approved tool. I choose the source, usually ChatGPT or Gemini.

3. Then they can move to Claude, with one rule: they have to prompt it for direct citations.

4. They click the cited link and explore that site. This is the step that matters. The AI isn't the answer. It's the way to find the real source.

The goal is for students to see that they used one resource to find another. That's research.

5. Disclose it. AI use is allowed, as long as students tell me before they use it.

Why this works

Students learn to name the tool they used.

They learn to check what it told them against a real source.

They learn to say out loud where a fact came from.

Those are the skills that will still matter no matter where AI goes next.

A low-stakes place to start

If you're nervous about trying this, start on a day when nothing is riding on it. The day before a long weekend is a good choice. I use a teacher-built game and a webquest that introduces the next unit. Students can use their computers, but they have to cite the source and disclose any AI use. The full plan is here: Teaching After a Long Weekend.

More on AI and the classroom

Questions About AI and Project-Based Learning

AI Bell Ringer Creator: A free tool that builds a custom warm-up from any topic.

Have a prompt or AI workflow that works in your classroom? You do it after every transition, every group activity, and every time the energy spikes. If it takes a minute each time, that adds up fast.

I run a class-vs-class point system I call 3-2-1-Done. It turns getting quiet into a weekly competition between my class periods, and the reward is simple enough that I can keep it going all year.

How it works

Every class starts the week at zero points.

When I need the room, I count down: three, two, one, done.

Quiet on three: 3 points

Quiet on two: 2 points

Quiet on one: 1 point

Quiet on done: 1 point

After done, the class loses 1 point for every second it takes. I count it out loud: "one Mississippi, two Mississippi."

There are optional add-ons, too. A class can earn a plus when everyone turns in their work, and take a minus for tardies. I keep the negatives low on purpose. The point is to reward the room for doing the right thing, not to pile on.

The reward

At the end of the week, the class with the most points wins Pringles, a water, and 15 to 20 minutes of their own time, as long as they stay seated at a low murmur.

That's it. It isn't expensive, and it doesn't need to be. What matters is that it happens every single week.

Consistency is the whole thing

A reward system only works if students believe it is real. If the prize shows up some weeks and not others, you've taught them the system doesn't matter.

So the key word here is consistent reward. Same countdown. Same points. Same prize. Every week.

Expect it to take time

Buy-in isn't instant. Usually it takes about three weeks before students take the countdown seriously. This year it took about six. Don't give up because week two looks rough. Keep counting, keep scoring, keep paying out.

Why it works

It's fast. The countdown takes seconds.

It's peer-driven. Students start shushing each other because their class's points are on the line.

It's positive. Most of the points are earned, not lost.

It's visible. Post the weekly standings and let the competition do the work.

Pair it with your bookends

3-2-1-Done works best when the rest of your routines are solid. A daily bell ringer gives students something to do the moment they walk in, and an exit ticket closes the period. The countdown handles everything in between.

For more positive reinforcement systems, see Elevate the Norm and the Classroom Systems Playbook.

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. The temptation is to react fast and hard. That usually makes things worse.

A calm, consistent process protects the student, protects you, and actually teaches something.

Step 1: Gather before you accuse

Compare the work to the student's earlier writing.

Note specific concerns: sudden style changes, sources that don't exist, content you never taught.

Remember that AI detectors are not reliable enough to be proof on their own.

Step 2: Talk with the student, privately

Ask open questions: "Walk me through how you wrote this." "Explain this paragraph to me." A student who wrote the work can usually talk about it. Keep the conversation about the work, not the student's character.

Step 3: Follow your policy, every time

Use your school's policy and apply it the same way for every student. Consistency is what makes a consequence feel fair.

Step 4: Contact home

Document the conversation and let families know, calmly and factually. A parent communication log helps here.

Step 5: Teach the skill

The best long-term fix is clear expectations about what AI use is allowed. Many teachers now allow AI with disclosure: students say which tool they used and cite the real source behind any fact. That turns a cheating problem into a research skill.

Free tools

Academic Integrity Violation Response: A step-by-step framework.

Academic Integrity Email Templates: For contacting families.

Parent-Teacher Communication Logs

Questions About AI and Project-Based Learning

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. Lamps in the corners, string lights over the board, and whatever daylight comes in the windows.

It isn't magic. But lighting is one of the cheapest ways to change how a room feels, and teenagers notice.

Why teachers do it

Mood. Softer light reads as calmer, especially after lunch or on test days.

Screens. Projected slides are easier to see with the overheads dimmed.

Signals. Switching lights is a built-in transition cue: lights down for independent reading, lights up for group work.

What to check first

Before you buy anything, check your school's rules. Many districts limit extension cords, plug-in lights, or anything that adds load to an outlet. Fire codes matter. Ask your custodian or front office; they'll know. Also make sure the room is still bright enough for students to read and write comfortably, and that hallways and exits stay well lit.

Low-cost options

Use what's already there. Many rooms have two or three light banks on separate switches. Try running only one.

Open the blinds. Natural light is free.

Add a few approved lamps in reading corners or at the back of the room.

For more on stretching a small budget, see cheap classroom supplies.

Use light as a routine

Lighting works best when it's predictable. Pick one or two light settings and tie them to activities so students know what each one means. Knowing yours helps you understand why some things work in your room and others don't.

The four classic styles

Most frameworks describe four styles based on two things: how much control the teacher keeps and how much warmth the teacher shows.

Authoritative (high control, high warmth). Clear rules, consistent follow-through, and real relationships. Students know the limits and know the teacher cares. This is the style most research and most veteran teachers point to.

Authoritarian (high control, low warmth). Strict rules, little explanation, and little relationship. Rooms are often quiet, but students comply without buying in.

Permissive (low control, high warmth). Friendly and flexible, but rules bend. Students like the teacher, but class time leaks away.

Indifferent (low control, low warmth). Few expectations and little connection. This usually signals burnout more than a choice.

Moving toward authoritative

If you lean authoritarian: add warmth. Learn names fast, make positive calls home, explain the why behind rules.

If you lean permissive: add structure. Set fewer rules, but enforce them every time.

If you feel indifferent: that's a signal to protect your energy. See First-Year Teacher Burnout.

Systems make any style stronger

Routines like a daily bell ringer and exit ticket add structure without adding strictness. They do some of the management work for you.

Classroom Management Styles

What Is a Classroom Management Plan?

Classroom Management Strategies

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. write goals. "Get all A's." "Do better in math." "Be more organized." By October, almost nobody remembers what they wrote.

The problem isn't motivation. It's the goals. They're too big, too vague, and too far away. Here's a simpler approach that holds up.

Make the goal small

A good student goal fits on a sticky note and can be checked off. Compare:

"Do better in math" vs. "Turn in every math assignment this week"

"Read more" vs. "Read 20 pages before Friday"

"Participate more" vs. "Answer one question out loud each day"

Small goals give students a win fast, and wins are what build the habit.

Make the timeline short

One to three weeks is the sweet spot for middle and high schoolers. A semester-long goal is too far away to feel real. When a short goal is met, set the next one.

Make progress visible

Students should be able to see their progress without asking you. A simple tracker taped inside a folder works. So does a quick weekly self-rating. The free student self-assessment form from Elevate the Norm adapts well for this.

Check in, briefly

Goal setting fails without follow-up. Every week or two, give students three minutes to answer:

Did I meet my goal?

What helped or got in the way?

What's my next goal?

Those three questions do more than a long reflection essay.

Connect it to conferences

Goals give students something concrete to talk about with their families. If your school runs conferences, try having students lead part of them. See student self-assessment for parent-teacher conferences and the free student-led conference template.

Go deeper

Student Goal Setting: What Actually Works in Grades 6–12 on Elevate the Norm

Student Responsibility in the Classroom

On Positive Teacher: What Responsibility Means to Teenagers

Want it ready to print

Everything above is free. So why would a teacher need a classroom culture framework too?

Because the two do different jobs.

PBIS: the schoolwide floor

PBIS is a schoolwide approach. It sets common expectations, teaches them directly, recognizes students who meet them, and uses data to plan support. It works best when the whole building runs it consistently.

A classroom culture framework: your room

A classroom culture framework is what happens inside your four walls: your routines, your recognition systems, your relationships, and how you respond when things go wrong. It's specific to you, your subject, and your students.

How they fit together

PBIS gives students the same language across the building.

Your classroom framework turns that language into daily habits in your room.

When they line up, students hear the same message all day.

Pros and cons at a glance

PBIS - Consistent across the building - Data-driven - Depends on staff buy-in and administrator follow-through

Classroom framework - Flexible and personal - You control it - Has to be consistent to work, and can clash with schoolwide systems if you don't align it

Read more on Elevate the Norm

Classroom Culture Frameworks vs. PBIS: Pros and Cons

Classroom Culture Frameworks: Common questions, answered.

Classroom Culture Frameworks for Middle School

Best Classroom Culture Framework for Student Engagement

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. The format matters less than you'd think. What matters is that students do something with the notes after they write them.

Three formats worth teaching

Guided notes

A handout with the structure filled in and key words left blank. Great for students who struggle to keep up, and for content-heavy days. The risk: students fill in blanks without thinking. Fix it by leaving one open question per page they have to answer in their own words.

Cornell notes

A page split into three parts: notes on the right, questions or key terms on the left, and a summary at the bottom. The left column and the summary are what make it work, because they force students to process the notes, not just record them. If students skip those parts, it's just regular notes with a line down the middle.

Sketch notes

Words plus simple drawings, arrows, and boxes. Students who "can't draw" do fine; stick figures count. Sketch notes work well for processes, timelines, and cause-and-effect.

The habit that matters most

Whatever format you choose, build in a two-minute review at the end of class or the start of the next one. Have students:

Circle the one idea they'd put on a test

Write one question they still have

Turn to a partner and explain one thing from their notes

That review is where the learning sticks. It also doubles as a quick exit ticket. See The Last Five Minutes for more ways to close a lesson.

Reading and annotation

Notes from a lecture and notes from a text are different skills. For reading, teach a small, consistent annotation system: a symbol for the main idea, one for a question, one for a connection. Elevate the Norm has a full guide to annotation strategies for grades 6–12.

Go deeper

Note-Taking Strategies for High School Students: the full comparison on Elevate the Norm.

Digital Reading Strategies for Students: for classes that read mostly on screens.

Checking for Understanding: quick ways to see whether the notes turned into learning.

Want it ready to print

Everything above is free. Teachers picture weeks of noisy group work, half-finished posters, and one student doing everything.

That's not PBL. That's a project with no structure.

Project vs. project-based learning

A project usually comes after the teaching: learn the unit, then make a poster about it.

Project-based learning flips that. The project is how students learn the content. They need the information to finish the work, so they go looking for it.

The structure that keeps it from falling apart

Start with a driving question. A real question with more than one defensible answer.

Teach directly when it's needed. PBL doesn't replace direct instruction. Most good units start with it.

Set checkpoints. Especially in the middle, when students have facts but not yet an argument. That's where projects fall apart without one.

Assign roles. Every student owns a piece.

Use a clear rubric shared on day one.

End with a real audience. Present to another class, families, or the community.

Use your bookends

On project days, keep the routines:

A bell ringer that sets the goal for the day.

An exit ticket asking what each group finished and what's next.

The routines keep project days from turning into free time.

Ready-to-use units

History Project Ideas: 10 Free Units

Project-Based Learning Guide

Questions About AI and Project-Based Learning

Standards-Based Grading Rubrics

Want it ready to print?

Everything above is free. It's also the hardest learning to check. A quiet student might have caught everything or nothing.

A short exit ticket built for listening fixes that.

Seven quick formats

The one-sentence summary: what was the main point of today's discussion?

Who said it: name one idea a classmate shared and whether you agree.

The changed mind: what did you hear today that made you think differently, even a little?

The missing piece: what question didn't get answered?

Quote and react: write down one line you remember from the video and respond to it.

Timeline check: put three events from the lecture in order.

The headline: if today's class were a news story, what would the headline be?

Why the classmate question matters

Number two is my favorite after a discussion. It tells you if students were listening to each other, not just waiting for their turn to talk. That's the whole goal of student discussion.

Keep the time tight

Listening checks should take two or three minutes. Hand out half-sheets or index cards during the last part of the discussion so you aren't scrambling at the bell.

Free tools

Formative Assessment Strategies for Listening: 7 Checks That Work on Elevate the Norm has the full list.

Student Discourse helps you build discussions worth checking.

Printable Exit Tickets has paper setups that make this fast.

Want it ready to print

Everything above is free. Heavier things fall faster. Seasons happen because Earth gets closer to the sun. Plants get their food from the soil.

They'll memorize the right answer for the test and keep believing the wrong one. Exit tickets are the cheapest way to find out which is which.

Ask them to explain, not define

"What is photosynthesis?" gets a memorized definition. Try:

"A tree weighs thousands of pounds. Where did most of that mass come from?"

"Two balls, one heavy and one light, are dropped from the same height. What happens and why?"

"It's summer in Alabama. Is Earth closer to the sun right now? Explain."

Questions like these show you the thinking behind the answer.

Use a wrong answer on purpose

Give students a claim from a made-up student: "Jamie says it's colder in winter because we're farther from the sun. Is Jamie right? What would you tell Jamie?" Students are more willing to correct someone else than to question themselves.

Sort and respond tomorrow

Make three piles: right with good reasoning, right answer but shaky reasoning, and the misconception. That middle pile is the one teachers miss. Open the next class with a quick demo or discussion aimed at the most common wrong idea.

Keep it to one question

One good question beats three okay ones. You'll read them faster and you'll see the pattern.

Free tools

Formative Assessment Strategies in Science on Elevate the Norm covers more ways to catch misconceptions.

Science Exit Tickets: Prompts for Labs, Lectures, and Everything Between has ready-made prompts.

Start the next class with one of the free warm-ups from the Bell Ringer Library.

Want it ready to print

Everything above is free.
